When you’re setting up a new retail store or shop, there’s a lot of things you need to get done. In all the rush, you might forget that you’re not always going to be able to keep a close eye on everything that’s going on, and as much as you don’t want to think about the worst case scenario, it is possible that you might experience a break-in at some point.
Instead of waiting for the worst to happen, it’s important that you take a proactive approach. Make sure that you’ve burglar proof your retail store so even if someone does try to break in, they can’t make it through! Here are 3 simple ways you can do, just that.

3 simple steps to burglar proofing your retail store

Following these three steps, you will make sure that the burglar has a tough time getting in, even if he does, he can’t get to the valuables and if they do, the crime will be caught on camera!

1. Install CCTV Cameras

Most of the time, break ins won’t happen during business hours. Burglars want to get what they can and get out as quickly as possible without being seen, so they tend to pick the middle of the night instead. If you experience a late night break in and don’t have any CCTV cameras, the chances that you’re going to be able to track them down are going to be slim at best. CCTV cameras will help you have proof of what happened, and will help track the perpetrator down! Besides, they’re also useful to have during business hours just in case someone tries to shoplift anything from your store. Finally, they also help keep an eye on the place remotely if you can’t be there in person.

2. Keep the valuables locked away

If you own something like a jewelry store, you likely have lots of little pieces that need to be moved around during the day. It is more convenient to keep them in an unlocked shelf that’s easy to reach, but that’s where things get dangerous. If it’s easy for you to reach, it’s easy for a burglar too! You need to keep the valuables locked in cabinets at all times. Now, these shouldn’t be regular locks that can easily be snapped. Get special locks for each cabinet so the valuables inside are as secure as possible. If you’re not sure about which locks would fit where, call a locksmith in Chicago or your local locksmith so they can come to analyze your cabinets and suggest the right locks for each one. This will ensure that even if you do get a break in, the most valuable items are safe!

  1. Make sure all the entry points are secure

You might have gone for all glass doors and windows to let natural light in and keep the place bright and airy. Although that does wonders for the overall aesthetic of your retail store, it can make it very easy for intruders to break in. If you’re going for glass, get the strongest one you can find to make sure it won’t shatter easily.

If you have sliding doors, place a rod in the tracks before locking up for the night so a burglar can’t just slide it open even if they manage to break the lock!

Finally, get anti-snap locks for all the entry points to make sure that you make it as difficult as you possibly can for the burglar to make it inside. If they try to break that lock, it will break off in a way where the locking mechanism stays in place and the door jams so even after all their efforts they can’t get in!
